Building your Luge

May I remind you that:

When building a luge board you must remember that you will be going very fast (around 40-70mph) on a piece of wood that is only about 3" off the floor, so make sure it is strong.

To make a luge like mine is very simple and only takes a few hours, without using any power tools. The end result isn't very pretty, but you could sand and paint it if you can be bothered (which I couldn't)

Start with the seat pan. Find 4 pieces of wood that measure 22"x6"x3/4". Place two of the pieces end to end on the floor. Then place the other two pieces side by side, on top of the middle of the other pieces. Hammer all these pieces together with lots of nails or screws and some glue. Then cut a piece of camping mat to fit on the upper pieces of the seat pan.

For the rear chassis find a piece of 3"x2" and cut it to around 18" long. Cut one end at a 45 degree angle. For the front chassis find another piece of 3"x2" and cut it to the length of your inner leg add 6", and again cut one end at a 45 degree angle.

Attach the front and rear chassis to the seat pan by screwing them together with lots of long screws from the top and bottom. Attach the chassis so that they equally overlap the seat pan at each end. make sure that your body fits on the seat pan, then screw the whole thing together, making sure that the chassis are as central and in-line as possible.

The foot pegs are made from a piece of 12"x1"x1/2" wood nailed onto the chassis. The correct position for the foot pegs is where your feet lie when you lay on the luge with legs slightly bent.

Attach the trucks to the chassis with screws or bolts, directly in front and behind the seat pan.

Add lots of padding to the front and rear chassis.

Sand and paint your luge if you want to. Your luge is now ready to ride.
